Of Leaf and Tree

Star shaped leaf, in the palm of my hand,

you try to fly away, as leaves

bound to branches seldom do.

Wanting for the following wind–

But dreaming hopes of freedom

leave you stranded on the ground.

There are depths beyond the rigid and brittle,

in coarse hand I can feel a yearning

as if it were my own heartโ€™s desire too.

There is excitement in getting carried

away from stillness, and a low,

in the sudden halt of its active flow.

Leaf in my hand, you have traveled

far from your tree, but I see

the mighty oakโ€™s peace inside you.

The journey of an ancient, resides

in your pattern, life as long as a season,

with veins, as the bones of awakening.

Fly on the wind, softly carry away

in the rhythm of life, listen to its call,

just as a cricket sings in tall grass,

quietly keep close, the distance

of your sacred bones, let them be

the only glue that binds you to this life.
